Private-key essentials / 2 min read

The key, the signature, and the asset.

Understanding these three ideas makes self-custody more practical: where an asset is recorded, how an action is authorized, and what a backup can restore.

The asset is recorded on its network

A hardware wallet does not contain coins or NFT artwork. Blockchain networks maintain the records that describe balances, token ownership, and other account state. A wallet helps you manage the keys associated with those records. A public address can be used to inspect activity or receive supported assets without revealing the private key. The address and the key have different purposes: one identifies an account or destination; the other is secret information used to authorize actions. Different networks and account types use different arrangements.

A signature proves authorization

In a typical private-key wallet, software prepares information for a cryptographic signature. The signing process uses the private key without publishing the key itself. Other participants can verify that signature against the corresponding public information. This is useful, but a valid signature does not mean the requested action is sensible. A misleading request can still ask for a real permission. Read the action, network, destination, and scope carefully. Viewing an address or collection is different from approving a message or transaction.

The device and the recovery information are separate

A device PIN protects access to a particular device; it is not automatically a way to reconstruct missing keys. Many wallets use a recovery phrase from which keys can be derived, sometimes with additional recovery requirements. The correct process depends on the wallet and its configuration. Keep the required recovery information private and offline, and follow verified instructions for that specific setup. A backup may help restore access after device loss, but it cannot reverse an action already authorized on the blockchain.

Know the boundary of the protection

Separating private keys from an everyday computer is one part of a custody plan. It does not guarantee that a website is genuine, that every request is harmless, or that a recovery backup is stored safely. Before choosing hardware, check its documented security model, supported networks, recovery method, and software requirements. This guide explains general concepts rather than the implementation of an unreleased product. Final security specifications and companion-app behavior for ᴏᴋx hardware will be published when verified.
